The city of Namibia, Windhoek has a population of approximately 365000 people. It is situated in Namibia’s central highlands, at 1650 m above sea level.
Windhoek is the heartbeat of the country and mirrors Namibia’s national image of peace, openness and harmonious cultural diversity. The charm of the City of Windhoek lies in its unique blend of African and European cultures and the friendliness of its people. Since independence on 21 March 1990, the city has been characterised by a vitality born of a sense of freedom and pride in itself.
During the day, the city is a bustling hive of activity. With a Central Business District made up of skyscrapers yet surrounded by natural bush-covered hills, Windhoek offers visitors the best of both worlds. Being one of the cleanest and safest cities in Southern Africa, the city offers all visitors safety, ease of travel and a pleasant atmosphere.
English is the national language of Namibia and the medium of instruction. It is spoken widely in Windhoek, as are other languages including Afrikaans, German and seven ethnic languages. Namibians are warm and helpful people who are only too willing to assist where they can. With 13 ethnic groups spread all over Namibia, the country and capital is a melting pot of culture and diversity.
Namibia introduced its own currency, the Namibia Dollar {N$}, divided into 100 cents. The Namibia Dollar is linked to and is on par with the South African Rand (R).
